My Students

More than 1/3 of our students are from low-income households.

Our school was built in 1973 and is a mix of low-income and middle class communities.

Some of our students have very challenging living environments. Some of our students have stable family homes. The beauty of our school is that we all come together. We support one another, help each other and are here for each other. We have several systems in place to promote a school family environment. We have rules and hold to the rules consistently, individually and collectively. I want to encourage my students love to read! We have had several reading incentive programs through the library and school.

My Project

These books are great titles. Our district middle school librarians have committed to competing in a school and district wide competition of reading in America's Battle of the Books.

These titles are interesting and not as daunting as some higher level books for this transitional stage between elementary and high school.

It will help prepare them!

America's Battle of the Books program has incorporated many (Bud, Not Buddy, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, Hatchet, etc.) and we as a district have chosen a few too (The One and Only Ivan, Esperanza Rising, etc.) to replace other outdated titles or titles we don't think will captivate students' interest as well as some of these.

We need more books that fit this lexile range and are well written to maintain and regain interest of our students to improve and continue in their literacy and develop their lexicon.
