These materials will make a difference because the students won't leave empty handed from the district competition. They all will have won their school competition and the top 3 teams will leave with a book (or set of books) depending upon winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in the first ever Canyons School District Battle of the Books (BoB) competition.
Hard work, study and effort pay off! The students will be recognized for their reading, study and diligence to make it to this level in the reading competition. Reading is the basic foundation for successful learning. We are trying to increase reading levels school and district wide and have implemented several stepping stones toward this goal.
Students are motivated to read when it is school and district wide, even teachers are on board: reading and competing in this program. I am competing in this program (not for the prizes, just for modeling/example). Stepping stones encourage reading. Some stepping stones we have in place: I created a google classroom for BoB, teachers support BoB as their curriculum year project, student teams facilitate collaboration as well as individual responsibilities and independence (each student has books assigned), and the competition and prizes are stepping stones and motivation factors as well.
