This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
High School is a public, charter school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our students come from every single region of our vast city with many different needs. Karr's student population is 98% African-American with over 85% of students qualifying for free and/or reduced lunch. Several of our students also receive special education services and English Language Learner services.
My specific students, many of whom have special needs, are high school juniors who are in my English III classes.
As their teacher, I feel that it is my duty to prepare them for college and life.
My Project
My students approach learning from various different methods. For some, independent work and silent reading is beneficial. However, for most of my students, interactive learning with classmates makes the biggest impact.
Therefore, what better way to encourage growth of vocabulary skills, spelling, and critical thinking skills than by working with their peers in an engaging learning method that also fosters healthy socialization, technology-free conversations, and problem solving?
Scrabble, SLAM, Bananagrams, and Boggle are excellent literacy activities that will help students learn new vocabulary words, understand word pronunciation and usage. Other enrichment games, such as UNO, DOS, and Connect 4, have also been added to encourage problem solving, practice computing mental math, understand financial literacy concepts, and build positive camaraderie.
