My Project

My students are identified as gifted and talented, and are therefore receiving special services in my classroom. They require lessons and projects that involve higher order thinking, problem solving, and allow them to be creative in every way. I strive to introduce them to new cultures and topics as much as possible, and I would love to do so through play. Being in middle school, my students do not get to play as often as they would like to, and I like my classroom to be their outlet.

By teaching them how to play the traditional Chinese game Mahjong, I will be able to improve my students' short term memory, attention, and logical thinking.

Mahjong is referred to China's "national pastime" and dates back to the mid-1800s in Southern China towards the end of the last imperial dynasty. Once Mahjong became popular in America, it offered solace and a sense of community to its players. This game and the instruction of how to play will allow my students to build community and encourage teamwork. It will also pave the way for the exploration of Chinese culture and how integral this game is to different communities of people.
