My Students

Community building. That's the theme in my classroom every day. With the struggles my students are facing, building a sense of community in our classroom is critical for making them feel like school is a safe place with people they can trust.

We are a neighborhood school serving a high needs urban community.

Our hardworking parents and families are facing tough financial challenges. We're a Title 1 school and 90% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. Nearly 50% of our students speak a language other than English at home. Many of my students who work two or three jobs and they miss having their parents home for homework and dinner time. When they come to school, it is so important that they feel nurtured, safe and cared for. We work really hard at building a strong sense of community within our classroom walls. Part of that experience is the time we spend gathered on the carpet, whether it's during our daily calendar time, reading together or sharing our work.

My Project

When I started here at the beginning of the school year, my classroom had no rug. Being a second year teacher, I don't have a lot of the resources that veteran teachers have collected over the years. So with the small allotment the teachers receive for materials at the start of the year, I bought two industrial rugs from Home Depot, some black gaffer tape and pieced it together for a makeshift rug. It's thin and a little rough to the touch, but it was something. Now at the end of a busy year with 20 first graders, it's frayed, the tape has come off, dirt has collected and I don't know if can take another year. I've seen these beautiful classroom rugs in education stores and other classes before. With different colored spots for kids that include alphabet letters, it's both comfortable and a perfect opportunity to reinforce their skills while sitting on the rug. Starting next year with a new rug would allow us to come together and start our community building together in comfort!

Your donations will give my students a rug they deserve.

Their surroundings affect their learning and enthusiasm. This rug will get them excited to come to the carpet and make them feel welcome in our classroom.
