Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if you grew up behind a digital screen? What if you never had a chance to make anything with your hands? Something to make you proud and show off to your friends.
My students are hard-working and generous middle- and high-schoolers.
We make each other laugh every day! They are always eager to help me and to help each other. From the straight-A kid who doesn't need to study, to the struggling student who doesn't always make it to class because he has to work, they always work together to get the most out of our time. My students live in Washington Heights, a low-income, Spanish-speaking neighborhood of New York City. Many have grown up in single-parent homes, and are either first- or second-generations immigrants. Sewing club will give them a safe place to be after school, and provide new ways for them to practice their social skills. They'll experience the joy that comes with finishing something that you made yourself. Sewing also uses a LOT of math--I look forward to them finally understanding fractions!
My Project
So many students spend a lot of time behind screens--so few have the opportunity to make something!
These sewing machines, zippers, thread, needles and fabric will help me start a sewing club for my students and give them a way to work with their hands.
I have a passion for sewing and quilting. I've shared my work and my own machine with my students, and they've grown to love it, too! Now, since I can only bring one machine to school, the students want to have their own machines to make their own projects!
Each student has their own project they want to work on, from small pillows to ambitious prom dresses!
