My students are hard-working and generous high-schoolers. We make each other laugh every day! They are always eager to help me and to help each other. From the straight-A kid who doesn't need to study, to the struggling student who doesn't always make it to class because he has to work, they always work together to get the most out of our time. My students live in Washington Heights, a low-income, Spanish-speaking neighborhood of New York City. Many have grown up in single-parent homes, and are either first- or second-generations immigrants. For most, Spanish is the first language they learned, even though most of their schooling is conducted in English. This is a major challenge for our school: imagine having to learn math in English when you haven't even mastered Spanish! Our school is improving, but still has a long way to go. Most students operate below grade level in their classes. This is why language instruction is critical; it helps in all subjects!
