My students need 18 books to improve literacy connections in the art studio, including Klimt and His Cat, The Best Artist in the Ocean, and Katie and the Starry Night.
"The arts reach students not normally reached, in ways and methods not normally used." ~Edward Fiske, Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning.
Our school is a Title I magnet school for the arts, servicing a population which experiences a high level of generational poverty.
As an IB (International Baccalaureate) World School, Primary Years Programme, we are part of a global community of schools committed to developing internationally minded and compassionate citizens who reflect on local and global challenges. Utilizing inquiry-based learning, students are encouraged to make cross-curricular connections that relate to real life.
My Project
Every classroom should have a library, including the art studio. An art library will encourage students to make cross-curricular connections, as well as differentiate for different learning styles. Visual learners can read text on their own and study illustrations and photographs, enabling them to further explore artists and their work. Having an art library would also serve as a resource for me to tie in with lessons, and serve auditory learners when I read aloud to classes. Encouraging reading in the art room will build literacy skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and research skills.
Donations for this project will provide an opportunity for children in a high-poverty area to be exposed to literacy, math, science and social studies skills in a new and engaging way.
The library in the art studio will service students in PK-8th grade. Art teaches open-ended thinking and creates an environment of questions rather than answers. Let's use this environment as a catalyst for creatively connecting students to important skills in other subject areas, and inspire creativity!
