My Students

I teach in a special education classroom. Students come to me to get specialized help in an area where they have a weakness. We focus on filling in their education gaps. I teach in a middle school and work with mostly 7th and 8th graders with mild disabilities.

This year I have the opportunity to also work with students who are moderate to severe in their disability classification and they have quickly earned a special place in my heart.

My classroom needs to work for a variety of needs and function effectively to fit the needs of my students.

My Project

In Special Education, we have a unique opportunity to have different grade levels and also different ability levels within the same classroom. I want to provide a classroom where all students who come into my room have to tools necessary to be successful. For my students with mild disabilities, that means having enough books for them to each have a copy for in class reading and having dry erase markers to use on the white board desks as they solve math problems. For my students who have moderate/severe disabilities, it means having the tools readily available for them to learn daily living skills like vacuuming, and dusting; and having supplies to do art projects that help work on their fine motor skills.

I want my classroom to be a place where students know it is a safe space to be themselves, and they know their teacher has their back and will do whatever it takes to help them to succeed.
