Creativity and Reading Fun for First Graders

Help me give my students stem experiences with the lego coding express set and other lego building pieces, along with decodable books for beginning readers and games and activities that will help solidify early learning skills.

My Students

I am so lucky to teach an amazing group of 21 first graders! They are an extremely creative group who love legos, fidgets, magnets, sea shells- anything they can explore and play with. They also love reading books and writing stories. They are active, social, and fun!

Over half of my group are struggling with early reading skills.

I've made it a priority to create a large library of engaging children's literature in my classroom, but I've felt that these little strugglers need books that they can read independently so their confidence can grow. They also need learning activities that are highly engaging and playful.

I believe that the effects of covid-19 and the general levels of stress and contention in today's world are having a big impact on our littlest learners . They want school to be a social, fun place where they can see their friends and have fun learning. It is a joy to me to devote my time to providing this for them.

My Project

What do my struggling beginning readers need? Creative learning opportunities through lego building, fun and engaging reading activities, and decodable books to help them become successful readers.

I've found it challenging to find books for my beginning struggling readers that are decodable, yet engaging.

The books I've chosen for this project will be just the thing to help these children decode rather than rely on repetitive picture clues to "read". The "engaging" part is also very important to me. Children should love what they are reading! I've also chosen learning activities such as that will help solidify their knowledge of letters, sounds, and blending.

I've also included two professional development books that will help me on my journey to understand the best ways young children learn to read. This combination of materials will definitely contribute to the success of my students.
