I often say that my students go through rougher situations in life than I have ever gone through or probably will go through. Many of my past students have fathers in jail, witnessed shootings, have been forcefully separated from family members, have lived in homeless shelters, and more.
However, so many of these students, despite their broken lives at home, come to school with so much life and energy.
They have dynamic personalities, incredible sense of humor, and deep care and love for those around them. They WANT structured environment, deep relationships, and fruitful learning experience.
1st graders tend to shy away from writing. It's difficult for our little 6 and 7 year old friends to enjoy writing when they don't know how to spell majority of the words they want to write, not too sure what a good sentence should look like, and especially when they need to write on topics they don't really care about. I totally understand them--writing would be an absolute nightmare if I was in their shoes too!
I borrowed a tub of LEGOs from a friend last month to do a creative writing project where students built a scene of their choice and wrote a story to go along with their writing and let me tell you, I have never seen them so excited and eager to write!
They have been asking me since that day if I bought any LEGOs yet. I'm requesting a LEGOs Cafe Set, Community Minifigures, and Our Town sets.
When PLAY is involved in learning, it increases enjoyment AND effectiveness. By creating a scene of their imagination with these LEGOs and pairing that with writing narrative stories, students will learn that writing can be FUN.
The notebooks that students bring are often unfitting for them (they bring college-ruled notebooks), so the lined paper with space on top for illustrations will be extremely helpful for writing time. Many of my students cannot afford to bring everything written on their supply lists so a lot of the don't have markers or pencils. I just ran out of my own supply of markers that I put in the sharing bin, so it would be so helpful to have the Crayola markers that can bring color to their illustrations.
