For a group of kids who take so much pride in doing things on their own, having something that belonged entirely to them was a big deal.\r\n\r\nSince then, these books have completely changed our homework routine. Instead of loose worksheets getting crumpled at the bottom of backpacks, every assignment lives in one safe, official place. My students know exactly where their work goes and exactly what to bring back each morning. We've had far fewer lost papers, and I've watched them grow more independent week by week — checking their own pages, keeping track of what's finished, and taking responsibility for their own materials without needing reminders from me.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we'll keep using these books all year long as our assignments grow more challenging and my students take on more ownership of their learning. My hope is that by the end of third grade, the organizational habits they're building now will feel completely natural to them. My students are naturally eager to learn with technology, so we have incorporated the iPad into classroom jobs and responsibilities. Students get opportunities to take the lead, complete classroom tasks, and help our classroom run smoothly. They are always excited when it is their turn! Two of my first graders were especially excited and still get excited every time they wheel it into the library. It makes library helper an extra special job. Our teachers have been thrilled, too. No more heavy crates!\r\n\r\nNow that the fleet (as I loving call it) is complete, I'm working on rearranging other materials to improve storage. We don't need our old crate storage anymore, so our teacher instructional kits and move to more accessible place. \r\n\r\nThis is my third year here, and it's been a slow but steady process of transforming the library to best meet the needs of our school community.
