Creative Coping

Help me give my students coping mechanisms for a successful day in the Therapeutic Support Classroom.

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are of mixed grades, levels, and abilities, but we are one family when we are together. The classroom is designed as a therapeutic support classroom to help the children learn coping skills to be successful at school, home, and in the community. Many of my students have difficult home situations and are disadvantaged by multiple socio-economic factors.

My students learn best when the materials presented to them are hands-on or if they have the necessary material to cope with difficult moments in our day.

When it comes down to it, my students just have the need to feel loved, feel secure, and know they have the capability to be successful learners. In our classroom, learning is presented in a way to meet each individual student's needs for that moment, hour, or day. Every day, I want my children to go home knowing we will be there for them no matter the situation.

My Project

As more students are placed in my room, it is evident that children cope with anxiety and stressors quite differently. Since the room is a Therapeutic Support room, it is necessary to introduce new and different coping mechanisms to contribute to the children's success. I have noticed that COVID stressors have shown a need for more of a pressure coping mechanism such as the hammock and weighted blanket. The items will give the children the comfort they are seeking.

Children's coping needs are as varied as a bowl full of skittles!

The beauty of children are they are all so creatively different! With the introduction of the electric keyboard, children can use the music to calm themselves in a stressful or frustrating moment in the day. As an educator, it is my goal to help children find what works for them to be successful in a stressful situation.
