My students live in West Harlem and are in my Self Contained class for special needs students. Some of them present with autism, ADHD or other developmental challenges and delays. In addition, most of them are far below the poverty line but ALL of them have potential to thrive with the right opportunities and resources. Living in West Harlem positions my students close to Columbia University as well as other New York City's institutional gems including museums, historical sites, theater, Harlem's rich arts culture etc. With the right access and opportunities my students will make the leap across the line from doubly disadvantaged to empowered global citizens who will pay it forward as tomorrow's leaders!
My Project
My students need hands on, fun, practical experiences with mathematics.
Rather than learn math through pictures and worksheets, they need to design Magnetic Place Value ideas and build 2-D and 3-D geometric structures with Magnatiles.
Math is the universal language that allows humans around the world to explore sciences and collaborate for solving problems. My students, with their unique learning styles, need to be in on the conversations. Not by engaging in tedious math tasks but by speaking about, building, designing and defending their math ideas and mathematical thinking. They need opportunities to think about math conceptually and creatively, beyond boring memorization of procedures and formulas.
