Help me give my students a chance to collaborate remotely on a memorable mural symbolizing all they have accomplished, so they may leave a lasting legacy piece to be displayed at the school they could not return to.
My students were sent off on Spring Break happily looking forward to returning to school in one week to start the last quarter of their 6th grade/final year of elementary school. We had May Day celebrations, graduation, visits to the Jr. High school, and almost all our field study/field trips planned for this 4th quarter.
This was supposed to be the BEST time of their whole elementary school life.
Then COVID came. They never got to return to school. No May Day. No graduation. No end-of-year celebrations. No anything. Just parents going in 2 by 2 to pick up their personal belongings from their desks and a computer from the school. Our class fragmented.
My Project
Right now our students are being provided with academic extension services and our 6th-grade team is working hard to make things as engaging as possible, but the emotional toll is showing in our students. When I hold a Google Classroom Meet, the thing the students miss the most is doing things with their friends.
My solution is to have them remotely work on individual pieces of a class mural that we can then bring together to create a piece that will tell our story to the new generation of students.
We can brainstorm ideas together remotely and come up with the final plan. Because we are in a small rural community, I can drop off and pick up paint supplies to their home mailboxes to maintain social distancing. I have school approval to place the finished mural in our elementary school library when complete so they can leave a legacy piece behind at the school they couldn't return to.
