Creating Lifelong Readers with High Interest Texts

My students need a larger selection of high interest books to read during our literature circle unit. These include 10 copies each of "Divergent" and 5 copies each of 3 additional books.

My Students

When my colleagues and I put together our book options for literature circles we underestimated the power of a compelling YA text. The few options we have available for students are quickly snatched up. We need more options and more contemporary work.

My high school students are diverse -- there is high poverty and a high number of ELL students.

Despite their challenges outside the classroom, my students are fun and eager to learn. They are active in sports and in the community; they are kind and dedicated.

My Project

My five beat-up copies of "Looking for Alaska" were the first literature circle books my kids requested. I had 45 students vying for 5 books. I want to create an equal frenzy with recent YA favorites. "Divergent" won the prize for best book of 2011 -- it is climbing in popularity on the heels of the fan-favorite "Hunger Games." Adults and teens alike can't speak highly enough out "Daughter of Smoke and Bone", a science fiction book that involves angels, demons, romance and adventure. "Beauty Queens" is a satirical look at our pageant industry -- combine glitz and glamor with Survivor and LOST and you have this book. And "Before I Fall" is a book that utilizes the plot of the movie "Groundhog Day"....if you died and then had seven more tries to get the day right, what would you do?

I remember the first time a teacher handed me a book that I devoured in a day.

I remember falling in love with a story and losing myself in each page. While much can be gained from reading the canon, we can gain so much more by putting these types of books into the hands of students. Many of my students do not consider themselves "readers" -- I always say, "You haven't found the right book yet!" I hope these books will open that portal to lifelong reading.
