I am happy to report that my students are reading! Most of them said, in a reading survey I gave in the first week, that they \"hate reading\" and \"don't read.\" Well, they ARE reading everyday for at least 10 minutes in my classroom. I spent the first couple weeks helping students understand the different genres, taking personality/reading preference \"quizzes,\" and working on finding books that will fit their interests and level. They are allowed to choose whatever book they want. I have shown some book trailers (like a movie trailer but for books) of some of the books you donated to my classroom, and I've given some book talks and recommendations of the ones I've read so far. They did a book \"tasting\" where they previewed the books and added to their to-read lists. \r\n\r\nHaving more high interest and relevant books for my students has been so helpful. So many of the books are in the hands of students already. It is wonderful to have multiple copies of the most popular titles. Our library only has one copy of most books, so having these in my classroom, on my shelves available to students has been amazing!\r\n\r\nI have one student who was stubbornly resistant to reading any book. She selected one from the school library, but she wasn't actually reading it. Her reading level is pretty low, and I know she struggles to read. I noticed her lack of reading, that she was just sitting there with the book open but not turning pages, and after a couple days, I asked if she would be willing to try one I recommended. She said yes, and I handed her a copy of the graphic novel version of Long Way Down. She was engrossed from day one. This last week she admitted with surprise that she actually liked her book! This was a huge win and such an encouragement to me! \r\n\r\nThank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping me with this project and helping students find joy in reading again!
