My Project

The first few days of first grade set the tone for the entire school year. For many of my students, walking into a new classroom brings a mix of excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty. My goal is to create an environment where every child immediately feels welcomed, valued, and excited to learn.

With these resources, my students will participate in meaningful back-to-school experiences that help build friendships, confidence, and a strong classroom community.

We will read Alma and the Worry Stone and Where Oliver Fits. These heartwarming stories will spark conversations about worries, belonging, kindness, and celebrating what makes each of us unique. After reading, students will create their own colorful worry stones using air-dry clay to remind them they are brave and capable whenever they feel anxious throughout the school year. To celebrate our new classroom family, students will enjoy a special glow dance party complete with glow sticks, glow glasses, and music. This memorable experience will help students connect with one another in a fun, low-pressure environment while creating positive first-day memories they’ll remember all year long. Students will design friendship bracelets and name keychains using colorful beads, make bright crafts with cardstock and pipe cleaners, and receive thoughtful welcome gifts such as mini stuffed animals, pencil charms, and personalized name gifts to help each child feel seen and celebrated. An instant camera will capture these priceless first-grade moments so students can take home a special memory while also helping us create a classroom display that reminds everyone they belong. My hope is that every child walks through our classroom door feeling excited, supported, and confident. These experiences won’t simply make the first week fun—they will help establish a caring classroom community where students feel safe taking risks, making friends, and falling in love with learning.
