This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is currently made up of all male students that is why the sign on our door reads “Men at Work” and they live up to that each day. Some days, they go above and beyond the work that I ask them to do, inspiring me to keep pushing and never give up. I am preparing them for life outside of school because within the next four years each of them will be aging out of the public education system. I hope to make the transition to post-school adult living simple for my students and their families. One of the ways that I plan on doing so is running a classroom enterprise in which students create and sell t-shirts, bags, and hopefully some new items very soon. The vision for our classroom enterprise is that students will receive tools to continue creating products and implementing their work skills after they have aged out.
My Project
Our students work each day learning and enhancing work skills that will follow them when they leave the public education system. The goal of our school-based enterprise is to prepare students to work with their families from home when they age out. This year, we developed a new design using the handwriting and drawing of various students throughout our school, ordered prints of that design, and our students pressed it onto shirts. Each day we teach skills like using a heat press, folding shirts, hanging shirts, sorting sizes, and packaging orders.
Students can use these skills when they have graduated to have a business of their own continuing the use of their skills.
These supplies will allow us to expand our skills as students will be learning to apply our designs to coffee mugs. This will be a new process for both the students and the adults involved and we are all very excited to create something new.
