Creating Air Quality Maps of My Community

My Students

My class consist of a mix of five 4th graders, six 5th graders, and 8 Gifted 5th grade students. This eclectic group presents many challenges when implementing instruction yet my kids rise to the occasion everyday. My students also come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds: Arabic, American, South African, Caribbean, and Hispanic.

Our greatest strength is this diversity.

We work hard.

We make mistakes and we learn from them.

My Project

Students will use an Amprobe CO2-100 Meter to take air quality (CO2) measurements inside their homes, offices, restaurants, and stores they frequently visit with their parents.

Students will then print out a GOOGLE street view photo of their community, marking buildings with high CO2 concentrations in red and buildings with low CO2 concentrations in green.

Finally each student will upload the data they've gathered and the photo to our Kidblog page along with a one paragraph description or short video recorded on their cellphones/laptops/pads explaining their findings and how we might lower CO2 concentrations in problem areas.

Students will comment on each others work via the blog to compare findings, provide feedback, and improve solutions. This work will also be completed outside of school.

If a teacher does not have a class blog, a simple composition journal will suffice. This project can be easily customized to meet any teacher's needs as long as they have the Amprobe CO2-100 Meter.

Projects will be displayed via Smart-board in our homeroom and we will have a round table discussion concerning the activity covering the following points:

What did we do? Why did we do it? What did we learn? What can we use this data for?

This ENTIRE project was developed with input from my class, because of this, and the unique real world application of the activity, they are ALL eager to participate.

In keeping with the "Science Everywhere" theme, I have agreed to monitor all blog activity outside of school hours.
