Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are located in southeast Fresno and are comprised mainly of second language learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
Our students come from various backgrounds including Hispanic, Hmong, African-American, and Caucasian.
A large number of our students are exposed to violence, gangs, physical and emotional abuse, drugs, and poverty. Students often struggle to achieve grade-level academics because they come ill-prepared for the rigorous demands, and often the struggles they are facing at home interfere with academic progress.
Although these students face many struggles in their community, they still come to school with a passion for learning and a desire to better themselves. For some, school is the only place that they can see a glimpse of a different future for themselves.
My Project
We are working very hard to foster a love of reading in the 3rd grade! We have already made great strides in reading this year and are looking for ways to maintain and increase our enthusiasm for reading.
I want to make sure that our classroom library is diverse, inclusive, and representative of all students and the world in which we live!
This literature has been chosen to ensure our classroom library is filled with high quality literature that is as diverse as the world in which we all live!
