In a diverse district, the conversations my students participate in about the topics of our lessons are relevant, authentic, and productive. Creating connections between the texts, their experiences, and their peers in order to make informed opinions and change the world are the most important goals in my classroom.
One of the most valuable resources students have are each other.
My students are always willing to help one another and work as a team to solve the problem at hand, be it questions about a text, debating an essential question, or defining their roles in the world. Students should feel that they can make an impact on the world around them and my classroom has often been a place for students to feel comfortable expressing their opinions and asking questions that they otherwise might not find answers to on their own. Interpersonal communication and collaboration are "real-world" skills that students need to practice, and as a teacher, I am lucky to be able to provide my students with the tools needed to successfully and appropriately discuss topics or questions and authentic opportunities to practice these skills.
My Project
Students in my high school classroom are almost always willing to talk with one another, but group work can often become daunting with the current desks supplied to my classroom. Besides the fact that every desk is right-handed (which really hinders the students who are "lefties"), they cannot be moved into shapes that are conducive to group learning. The tables and stools will help to open up an otherwise crowded classroom, allow students to move easily, and make projects and assignments easier for collaborative learning.
