This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The second through fourth grade at our school is made up of a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 7 - 10 year olds. My school is an urban, high poverty (97%) school that strives to do what's best for our kids. As part of our mission, we are creating a Comfort Closet where homeless students, and other at risk students, can go "shop" for school supplies, personal hygiene items, food, and basic clothing items. It is heartbreaking, but true, that each year we have a number of families at our school experiencing homelessness. Our school saying is Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today! I want to make their tomorrow better!

My Project

My school is creating a Comfort Closet which will have backpacks, school supplies, personal hygiene items, food, and basic clothing available for students that need it. This project is specifically for the backpacks for the Grade 2 -4 students. We expect that the majority of students with immediate basic needs, including these backpacks, are those that are experiencing a housing crisis and are homeless or on the brink of being homeless. When a housing crisis arises some students have relatives they can stay with until they can find a space of their own, and for others, they have to stay in one of the local homeless shelters. In any case, the impact of leaving behind most of their personal items and not having a place to call their own is an incredibly traumatic experience. The comfort closet will serve as just one spoke in the wheel of support/resources that a homeless student and their family will receive at our school.

Our hope is that the availability of items in the Closet will lessen the burden on the student so that they can continue to focus on academics and feel safe and supported while they are in school.
