Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

WALT DISNEY coined the phrase IMAGINEERING. Using knowledge, imagination and engineering he created a colorful, new world. I want to give my students that chance, many for the first time, to take their research and writing to the next level! IMAGINING. I want to give them that world of creativity!

My students are smart, excited, funny, and cooperative.

They are interested in learning and sharing what they know. Our school is a Title I (moderate poverty) school. Our teachers, PTA and parents are all actively trying to increase the opportunities for all students. Our school is a place where differences are celebrated and creating a sense of community is a priority. Students arrive in my class with a spectrum of skills and readiness. I want to teach them that creativity can make a presentation come alive! Just as Walt Disney could create a memorable story with colorful characters, I would like my students to experience bringing famous people to life. With an updated Biography Library and some basic art materials, my Imagineers will create Bottle Dolls and a œMuseum in a Box from their research. These projects can illustrate not only the person, but the times with objects that define their times and accomplishments. The class will benefit as well as the author

My Project

A Biography Library will provide my students with inspiring books and heroes. Students paired with biographies to their special interest or to their appropriate reading level are a sure win! Bottle dolls with yarn hair and beards pinned or glued to styrofoam heads, white felt lab coats or a grey felt suits, feathers or hats and that perfect accessory assembled on a bottle are the perfect fixings for the artful creations of every student! Dolls will be coupled with Museums in a box citing great quotes, timelines and "artifacts' that bring a written project to the new presentation standards of the Common Core. My students, many for the first time, will be able to design and create a project on their own, a 21st Century skill. Students will find their artistic expression, use it to convey information and learn from watching others create. I believe this project will set the foundation for Imagineering.

Thank you in advance for supporting this project.

My students have not had an opportunity to complete in depth research and presentations. With books and craft supplies, students will pair reading, writing and now CREATIVITY to expand their learning and sharing of that learning to others. Effective presentations are a skill all students need to compete in the global workforce. This grant will provide my students with that first step. Without your support, they could not compete. Thank you!
