My Students
I am a teacher/librarian in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face daily I am looking to and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in the library
The students love to read and do hands on science activities.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households, most with parents that speak very little English and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
The donation of materials to create a new and different library setting with Makerspaces with not only create a new experience for the students but also enhance the class curriculum that is required for them to learn.
My Project
The school library has become more than just books. We are a true extension of the classroom. The technology age has entered in and the librarian can now assist with the push for STEAM in education.
The materials I ask for will be used to aid in learning, monitoring time and behavior in the library while the librarian is assisting other students in the library special rotation.
During library time the students will be separated into groups that will use the materials as the other students are at the shelves checking out books. The materials will be connected to fairy tales and each time they arrive with a project connected to the makerspace.
A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. Makerspaces used in the library to make things that test their ideas, find answers, solve problems, and discover new ways of doing something. “The maker education approach to learning is highly individual yet lives within certain boundaries. Students will use Bloxel kits, Magna-Tiles, the Stick-Six strategy game, and Powerclix in the makerspace.
