I am the librarian at a school that includes grades 4K - 8. We are located in a rural, close-knit community in Wisconsin. Our school is small, but we don't let that stop us from being creative and innovative!
Students here seek out the library as a space to find their next favorite book, but also as a space to express their creativity.
Teachers here know they can find resources in the library for increasing creativity, particularly through the use of technology within their classrooms.
We encourage students to be inspired in this library. Each day, students here are building, designing, planning, and creating. It's my job as the librarian to provide the entire educational community with as many tools as possible to inspire future success.
My Project
In order to ensure my students are college and career ready as well as meeting Wisconsin state education standards, it is essential that they learn computer science and information technology skills. Part of their curriculum involves coding and programming, not just for the jobs directly related to those fields, but for the plethora of other jobs that don't yet exist, or will continue to change over the next decade requiring more computational thinking.
Robots are a highly engaging way to get my students thinking in analytical terms.
When students have an opportunity to work through a simple line of code and see the robot respond, they're hooked. It's a simple way for them to understand the power of programming, and this new robot comes with robust features that will help me to differentiate instruction for a wide variety of students in the building. By making these new robots available in the library, students of all ages throughout this school district will have an opportunity to learn more about mathematical reasoning and computational thinking which is essential for their future careers.
