"Where words fail, music speaks." ~ Hans Christian Anderson.
My diverse students are learning to express themselves through the joy of concert band for the first time this year.
The students have truly embraced instruments that, until now, they had never had access to. Our school prides itself on its commitment to the arts and sciences, areas that are neglected in many public schools.
We also pride ourselves on taking an innovative approach to teaching and learning in a diverse and quickly changing world. Our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomic status; 80% of our student population receives free or reduced cost lunch. Despite the wide variety of students, they have one thing in common: they all benefit from using music to express their creativity.
My students need instruments and supplies to continue to grow the concert band. We had many band instruments donated to us this year, but we still need many items to flesh out the band. This project focuses on percussion instruments.
Many of the pieces we would like to perform include crash and/or suspended cymbal parts; without these instruments, there are big holes in our songs.
We would also like to march in our town's Christmas parade next year, so we would like crash cymbals that can double as marching cymbals. The stands make both cymbals easier to play and care for.
Lastly, we need a repair kit in case anything happens while we are out performing. This repair kit will give us piece of mind while we are sharing our music with the community.
