This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Graphic novels are engaging books that immediately capture the attention of students of all ages, especially middle schoolers. The book I am requesting for my English Language Development class is titled "I Was Their American Dream". It is about the life of a teenager who is the daughter of immigrants who want her to have a better life than theirs.

This book is relatable, funny, and most of all represents the students in my class.

They will be able to see themselves and their families in this book. Because of its entertaining storyline, the book is engaging and fun to read, while also telling the important story of life as a second generation American, which is what many of my students are. My students come from families that have come to America for a variety of reasons and want their children to be successful and well educated.

These books will be the jumping off point for students to express their own experiences and the experiences of their families as they create their own graphic novels about their immigration story. After reading "I Was Their American Dream", my students will interview family members and tell their stories in graphic novel style, which they will then share with their classmates and families at a writers' workshop celebration.
