Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading is power, and my students need some power.
My school is a small school in a large district that is grossly underfunded.
We have money for most programs, but not for what is necessary in the classrooms. We haven't had an updated curriculum for the English courses in 12 years. Our students need supplemental materials to keep them interested in learning.
My students, the majority of which are Mexican American and come from a poor community, crave knowledge. They want to learn, and they understand that education is their way out of this lifestyle. These books will help them find joy in literature again.
My Project
The students will read, study, analyze and write about these books. These are college level texts that will allow students exposure to the types of reading that will be required of them once they arrive at University. Students will be interacting with these texts through projects, journals and video production. This will be something they've never experienced in a classroom setting before.
Tragically, students are not often exposed to good literature.
They don't see the wonders and power that reading can bring to them- or the grammar, syntax, diction and tone that they learn simply by reading. These texts and this book club will give them that ability. They will be able to interact with high level texts that will allow them to experience the wonders and power of reading.
