My Students

I have the amazing privilege of teaching special education at an awesome school full of outstanding students! Our students have various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of the students I work with struggle with executive functioning skills, social skills, reading, and writing.

The COVID pandemic has disrupted the learning for all students, but those in special education continue to struggle to adjust and adapt to the "new normal" that we are now living in.

The disruption in learning has created both negative consequences and challenges as well as created some positive changes and opportunities.

My Project

The Covid pandemic fast-tracked the use of personal technology in our classrooms. Each student receives a personal laptop but many students do not have access to headphones, mice, and keyboards. Additionally, students needing to charge numerous devices were not on the minds of most school building designers.

Many students, especially students receiving special education services, struggle with anxiety and Covid has certainly not helped the situation.

My project includes a variety of sensory, fidget, and stress-reducing manipulatives that will help my students cope with the multitude of stressors found in the classroom.

Finally, our kids just need an occasional break. Students often perform better when there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Fun activities such as escape rooms, card games, and other educational games can be a great reward for an excellent paper, high test score, or outstanding classroom participation.
