A typical day in my classroom is one of inquiry and discussion. Students enter my class with a willingness to learn about the world around them. I am hoping to mold young leaders who are able to advocate for themselves and that have an interest in protecting our environment.
My students are incredible young people.
They come to school every day with a willingness to learn and with so much to share. It is always great to be teaching my lesson only to stop to answer their multitude of interesting questions. My students are motivated learners and will go out of their way to seek knowledge. They are always coming to class with an interesting fact they learned that they can't wait to share with me. Even on my most challenging of days, I can count on my students to brighten things up. I am lucky to be teaching in an amazing school with involved parents, great coworkers, and a safe atmosphere. Unfortunately, though, teaching in a Title I school means a constant lack of funding. As a result, finding materials is a challenge.
My Project
My students spend part of the year studying coral reefs and the negative effects of climate change on these ocean ecosystems. I myself keep coral and love aquariums in general. I would love to be able to allow my students to see these beautiful species first hand and share this experience with my them. It is one thing to show pictures and talk about these enchanting animals, but it is something entirely different to be able to care for them first hand.
These incredible pieces of our ocean are in danger, and education is one of the best tools to combat their destruction.
Global warming and ocean acidification have taken a toll on the world's coral reefs. By allowing my students to become caretakers of their own slice of the ocean, I hope to instill a love of conservation and coral reefs. Students will be able to monitor water quality using titration test kits, track changes in various nutrient levels, and become master care takers of coral. These materials will also go towards setting up a quarantine tank that can be used to grow and observe coral before being placed in our classes display reef tank.
