Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our district has adopted a new Agricultural Science elective for high school students. Kids in this course are learning the value of sustainable home farming through the use of Project-Based learning programs that will expose them to the cost-effectiveness of sustainable and urban farming. Where my students live is a stark food desert and so the intrinsic value of learning to grow, farm, and harvest is truly immeasurable. Students who have begun this project have been able to incubate chickens in the classroom from eggs to the brooder and are now able to watch them grow into adult laying hens and roosters via live stream on our outdoor blink cameras. The peace and harmony that the chickens provide is such a mental health boost! During COVID, students did not have opportunities like this one. Now that we are back in class, providing these engaging opportunities goes a long way to helping recover learning loss and reengage in class.

The coop care items that I am requesting will support our growing chickens as they have transitioned from classroom to home and are moving from full-time indoor chickens to their outdoor coop.

Students have witnessed 5 baby chicks hatch and grow in the classroom. They grew up so quickly! Our chickens will grow to adulthood in an off-site chicken coop that will produce eggs that can then also be sold to show the cost-benefit of raising chickens at home. They will be monitored in class via live cameras. Right now, our chickens are housed in an indoor chicken run that they can stay in while we wait for them to be fully feathered and laying eggs in their coop. These items will help prepare their outdoor coop.
