Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach first grade in an urban school district. Half of my students are English language learners with English as their second language. Students in this class speak six different primary languages!

They come to school eager to learn, and I am proud to be their teacher!

I have already seen such growth with my students this year. Their reading levels are going up, the number of sight words they can read is increasing, and they are becoming so confident in their writing and math skills. I can't wait to see how much they grow this year!

My Project

I want my students to feel cool, calm, and collected in my classroom. When students first enter the room, they will see the welcome mat, which will help them feel at "home". The lights will not be as bright because of the ceiling light covers, which will help keep the room more tranquil. When students start to feel overwhelmed, upset or angry, they can squeeze the beloved character plush toys Elephant and Piggie from our class' favorite author, Mo Willems. They can also use the breath ball. When they take a deep breath in, they close the ball. As they breathe out, they open the ball all the way. As they breathe slowly, they open and close the ball, which helps them regulate their breathing to gain more self control.

With all of these items, my students will be able to self regulate their emotions much easier, which will lead to increased learning!
