Cooking with Kids

Help me give my students the chance to develop their social skills. Cooking and playing games give my students the opportunity to interact with typical peers in a fun and appropriate way.

My Students

I am a middle school special education teacher for 7th and 8th graders with a variety of severe disabilities that include autism and intellectual disabilities. My classroom is self-contained and the students are learning to work together in small groups. In the class we focus on life skills, behavior management and functional academics. I teach in a district where resources are very limited and my students come from some very challenging situations. This project will help focus on the sensory needs of the students. Many of my students need breaks throughout the day. Adding in sensory breaks will allow my students to focus on the more challenging work they do during the day.

My Project

One of the best things about our classroom is the full kitchen. Students love to cook and bake. But we need some new supplies. The plastic knife set will allow the students to prepare food safely. The mixing bowls with handles will allow the students to be more successful mixing ingredients.

We are fortunate enough to spend time with typical peers.

Some of the supplies we need are games that all of the kids can play together. Shark Bite and Toilet Trouble are fun and exciting games that all of the students can play. Learning social skills is extremely important. Learning through games and baking makes learning fun!

Using these new supplies will give my students a sense of community and accomplishment which they all deserve. Watching my students excel at different tasks brings joy to everyone who is lucky enough to experience our classroom.
