Our early childhood school is now in its eleventh year serving the community. In our Pre-K class, that means over 180 students will have come and gone from this Pre-K classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.
Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love of learning.
I've been teaching at my first and current school for seven years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.
My Project
Food has the power to bring people together. If you think about important events, holidays, and long overdue gatherings, they are all made special because of the bonding and conversations that takes place over food.
The late Anthony Bourdain said “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.”
One of my favorite projects requested materials to make dumplings which was inspired by a timid student making dumplings with playdough. Growing up in the same community I teach in is very special. I am able to connect with my students because I see my younger self in them. The culture, the language, the food and experience we all share makes our classroom very special.
A big part of growing up was making food with my parents. I never shared the experience with my class because I didn’t think anyone cared or it didn’t matter. That same feeling existed in my student when she was too timid to share that she made dumplings with her mom. I want my classroom to be a second home to my students where they feel comfortable to do and share anything because we are family.
Food is a big part of family. I want to connect with all of my kids and their family and the way to do it is through cooking. I am requesting materials create a cooking cart where parents can come in and find appliances and utensils needed to cook a special dish to share with our school family. Connecting our cultures through cooking is the start of breaking down the barriers we create because of things that are unfamiliar to us. I hope you will help support my vision of bringing our families together in our quaint PreK classroom.
