My students need cooking supplies to begin a life skills unit to help them make the transition into real-world living.

I teach a public high school self-contained special education class comprised of five boys with disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome to Autism.

My students are on the verge of exiting high school with few life skills to take with them during the transition. They have expressed a desire to learn how to cook simple meals for themselves without always having to rely on other adults for help. The boys need aid in measuring, creating a dish, monitoring cooking times, and serving meals for others. They have not been given the opportunity at home to learn fundamental cooking skills that others take for granted. As a result, the young men are fearful of exiting high school, and are afraid they won't be able to function.

Special needs students, especially those who have limited resources outside of school, need an opportunity and the supplies to develop basic life skills. We need cooking appliances and cutlery to help facilitate an effective learning experience. If the students learn how to make a few basic meals, they will develop confidence that will translate to a more successful transition upon exiting high school.

Your help will ensure that my students have the tools they need to be more independent upon exiting the public school setting. They need to feel that others care about them, and that they are able to complete projects without always relying on a family member to do things for them. A cooking unit would enable them to feel like adults for the very first time. Your help would also show them that they are important to others.
