Convergence Journalism: Student Journalists Take News Online

My students need two Acer Aspire netbooks to improve our online news reporting and to support our expanding journalism staff.

My Students

My student journalists hear the same warning yearly: "Journalism and print media is dying." Yet I challenge my students to take these predictions as a challenge. Though print media might be fading, online convergence media is the savior of journalism and the future of reporting.

I am blessed with the most outstanding, dedicated, and intelligent students at my school.

Every year I recruit the best and brightest from our campus community. I also try to reach out to students who might not normally apply for the class in order to try to diversify my staff. They are hard-working students who are goal-oriented and are incredibly driven to succeed. They are responsible for writing, editing, designing, and paying for the entire production schedule for the year. Print costs alone are close to $4,000 a year. If we hope to buy any new equipment we have to raise substantial extra funds. My online staff currently works on old, 128mb RAM eMACS which are falling apart. They never complain, but do their work to the best of their ability. My journalists, photographers, and artists are the finest students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. They are dedicated journalists and impress me daily in their maturity and desire to make a difference in their school community.

My Project

Two years ago I expanded my popular print journalism class and charged a few devoted students with beginning an online edition of our print paper. Over the past two years my students have transformed a blog into a fully operational website. We launch our new website next year. I have begged and borrowed computers from around the campus to create a working newsroom for them. They always get hand me down computers which barely work. Many are so old that I can't download simple programs like Firefox, Google Docs, and Picasa- programs which are very useful for peer collaboration and production. Having two additional portable netbooks would allow my students to write and interview on the go, make full access of the space available in our cramped room, and have the programs necessary to create a respectable, and hopefully award winning, website. My students will be able to more effectively serve our entire community through this new online news source in a much more timely and professional fashion.

In 2008, the NAA conducted a survey that reported students involved in journalism score higher on standardized tests and have a higher college GPA.

I get no funding from my school to provide technology for my journalists. We have to purchase all the technology we have in our room through ads and sponsorships and in a poor economy we have not received that same funds as past years. My students are hardworking and brilliant journalists who deserve technology to effectively report the news.
