Constructing STEAM Success: KEVA Planks for K-5 Engineers

Help me give my students eight, 400-piece KEVA Plank sets to bring hands-on engineering and design to life in our STEAM classroom.

My Project

My K-5 students are a resilient, enthusiastic group of young innovators who thrive when given the freedom to create. As a Title I school where many students come from high-poverty neighborhoods, our classroom is a vital sanctuary providing resources they might not otherwise experience. Although we have some STEAM kits, I saw the true power of hands-on learning firsthand when we took our first graders to Kaleideum in Winston-Salem. Watching them, I saw their imaginations instantly come to life through the beauty and simplicity of wooden planks. There are no screens, just pure, open-ended engineering that levels the playing field for every child.

These eight KEVA Plank sets will completely transform our STEAM classroom by giving every student the physical tools they need to test physics, geometry, and structural engineering principles in real-time.

By introducing these materials, my students will learn the critical skills of trial, error, and architectural balance. The sheer volume of planks will allow entire classes to collaborate simultaneously, moving them away from isolated screens and toward team-based design challenges. Because these planks are open-ended, they perfectly differentiate for all learners, from kindergarteners mastering balance to fifth graders building complex bridges.

Our goal is to foster deep STEAM confidence and spatial reasoning. I want to bring that magical Kaleideum energy into our daily environment so that every child, regardless of background, sees themselves as a capable engineer.
