This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist who provides related services to approximately 25 students with significant and varying learning needs in two different high schools in an urban district. The students are enrolled in functional life skills and vocational skills self-contained programs and their learning needs range from severe to profound deficits. Primary disabilities include Autism, intellectual deficits, and multiple disabilities with deficits that include significant cognitive impairments, communication impairments, physical limitations, social/behavioral deficits, and visual impairments. Many of the students have low verbal skills or are nonspeaking and use gestures, verbal approximations, signs, language boards, picture symbols, AAC, and/or voice output to support their communication needs. Our students attend school in person full-time.

My Project

Through the pandemic, we worked very hard at establishing meaningful and effective lessons for our neediest students. We created home learning boxes to share materials virtually and allow for hands-on activities. We supported their communication needs by providing the student and families with training in the use of communication aids such as activity-based language boards, picture symbol sequencing strips, picture symbol sentence strips, and social stories. Now that we are in school, full-time, I want to continue to support the connections we made at home by continuing to provide a way for our low verbal, limited communication students to be able to share their school and vocational work with their families. Printing picture symbol language boards, picture symbol daily journal entries, and picture symbol stories and pairing it with their work allows the students with limited communication skills to share their school experiences with their homes.
