Connecting the Classroom With a Document Camera

My Students

This is my fourth year teaching fifth grade and what an incredible ride I’ve had so far! My students come from a variety of backgrounds and have unique strengths and needs, but we are all tied together by a shared sense of classroom community and love of learning.

Students in my class are inquisitive, compassionate, and active learners.

This is about to be a year like no other, and my students are resilient and ready to learn, both in school and at home through a hybrid educational model.

My Project

We're starting the school year in a hybrid format, which means that students will be split into two groups and attend school on alternating days. As the teacher, this means I will be teaching half of my class in person, and half of my class online, each and every day. This will be a challenge for both myself and my students, and I've spent much of my summer "vacation" doing research, planning, and completely re-thinking how I teach.

A document camera will allow me to share classroom materials, such as books I read aloud or math manipulatives, with the students who are tuning in virtually from home.

Students who are in the classroom will benefit from seeing the enlarged projections on the SmartBoard, while students at home will be able to watch a live stream on their ChromeBooks. In the likely event that we return to a fully remote model in response to rising COVID cases later in the school year, I can use the document camera to teach from home and ensure that students are still getting a cohesive education.
