Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the embodiment of determination. Many of them come to school from situations that no child should ever experience: violence, extreme poverty, foster care, families living in separate homes and in separate countries. These are only some of the challenges they face, but it is their daily reality. The students at OCHS are amazing, resilient individuals, living in a high crime, high poverty city. Because of this, many do not have the means to travel outside of Philadelphia to experience learning outside of the classroom.

My Project

We love giving our students cross-curricular experiences that connect learning to life! The reasons we would like to take our students to Gettysburg, PA is to have the opportunity to expose students to the Gettysburg National Historic site that they have been studying in both history and literature classes. They will experience museums, local history, and facts about the area. This experience will allow them to connect the classroom to the world.

This cross-curricular experience will give students the opportunity to connect their learning to the world.

Our reasoning for choosing a day at Hershey Park is to give students the opportunity observe the physical, mathematical, and scientific nature of the rides present throughout the park. They can connect their experiences to STEM by learning and seeing how applied math, physics, and science are used when planning a park. They will also have the opportunity to visit Zoo America to observe animals from various regions of North America. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the exploration of the zoo and interact with staff and animals in their care.
