Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special is their resilience. My school is a diverse Title I school, but each and every student that walks through the doors always has a smile on their face, pushing through every challenge they've faced. My students have a range of skill abilities, each needing to be challenged in a different way.
My students often come from homes that are impacted by poverty, trauma, and situations I couldn't even imagine going through at their age.
All of my students deserve access to an environment that will help them succeed not only as students but as human beings. One of the most challenging elements of the emergent readers' diet is comprehension.
Every day, my students walk in with good mornings, sleepy eyes, and the eagerness of knowing the routine that occurs at school as many of them are not able to have routine and structure at home. They come to school knowing they will get 3 meals every day and that they are not only supported and loved by their teacher but also making their teacher proud of every ounce of effort they give.
My Project
The project I am asking for consist of a CD boombox with a set of 6 headphones and a storage center for them. I have a Walkman that we have tried using, but the batteries have been dying after one rotation of use. We use the listening center during literacy rotations while I meet with small groups, working with their skill abilities.
Comprehension is an important element of not only reading, but of the emergent reader diet.
Fluency, vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness and comprehension are the skills we work on in Kindergarten to support students into becoming the best readers. This project would support that skill and engage my students by being able to listen to stories and talk about the main character, setting, beginning, middle, and end.
