My Project

Hello, I teach 8th grade at a Middle School in South Atlanta. Over the years I have found that my students rarely read complete books, let alone read books together and discuss them. It may seem odd, but in their classes they usually read excerpts or short stories. So each year for the last 5 years my homeroom and I have read together. Beyond the lack of reading that most students are doing, many of my students have never had someone read a loud to them. So during the year we read out loud. I take the lead but each student has their own book and follows along and can read out loud as the situation accords. The process gives us the opportunity to simply enjoy reading and the community that can develop through a good story.

The reading opens the door for all kinds of discussions that help grow the students abilities to read and comprehend but also develops understandings of some of the difficult situations students will face in life.

In the past we have read "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas, "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds, and "Bud not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis. "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds has come highly recommended to me and I was hoping to read it with my class this year to continue this tradition. In the past I have purchased the class sets of books from my own money but I wanted to see if the community would be willing to take part in contributing this year. Thank you in advance for your support of the class and our students.
