Long Middle School now have a classroom library filled with books where they can finally find themselves: characters who look like them, speak like them, and face the same questions they're facing about identity, family, and the future. \r\n These books are now part of our daily classroom life. My 6th graders use them for independent reading and literature circles, connecting characters' choices to their own experiences, while my 8th graders study how authors develop theme and voice and then write personal narratives inspired by what they've read. Across both grades, I'm seeing longer stretches of focused reading, richer discussions, and more confident writing. \r\n Your gift did more than put books on a shelf. It told my students that people who have never met them believe their voices, cultures, and experiences are worth reading about. We are still well before soccer season in Georgia (season starts in February), but I am regularly visited by returning players. As a matter of fact, i have already given out a ball to some students who told me that they had been playing this summer until the old ball that they had been playing with developed a hole that they couldn't repair. And the excitement for the coming season is real. Even new students who are interested in playing and have heard about the team come up to me and introduce themselves. That I am able to provide the resources for them to all be active and practice is part of what makes the team dynamic. \r\nWe are currently waiting for the football season to wrap up before we can step onto the field to begin our unofficial scrimmages. In the past, these have been a vital boost to both the team and kids at the school in general. Even kids who will not try out for the team enjoy the chance to join in the comradery and get outside and play. That I have enough equipment with balls and the practice jerseys allows me to welcome them. Again, this gift is part of what make soccer dynamic at Long. For many of the players, this is their chance to take part in a structured, official athletic team. Thank you so much for your contribution. Even as a math teacher, I bring reading into the classroom whenever I can. I have a deep love of novels and remember with fondness reading aloud at home and with some dynamic teachers at school. Outside of the math classroom, there are lots of times when we have down time in our homerooms or when we are waiting to start school wide activities and books provide a way to make the time dynamic. This year we started reading a book with the first testing periods of the year before Ghost arrived (The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake) so we are actually not going to be able to get into Ghost for a little while (It's a slow process reading through a book, especially because I currently don't have the opportunity every day). But reading gives us an opportunity to not only improve as readers, but to develop our social and emotional skills. \r\nThe group I have been reading to this year are all english language learners. Although they all speak english, there is a lot of language and culture they are learning. As I read with them we stop and discuss what is going on with the characters in the book. How is the character feeling? What exactly does some of the language mean? Have you ever felt similar feelings? What would you do in the situation? With these kind of frequent check-ins I think the story develops in a more personal way and the students are able to get some guidance in how they can move through their own lives. It also assures understanding, something which is often glossed over by students in their rush to \"finish\". So even in the short time that we have been reading together this year I have seen the students engage with the text in a more personal way as we have progressed.\r\n\r\nWith all that said, I truly appreciate the gift of \"Ghost\". As we work our way though the literature this year, I'm excited to expand our library and our experience. I also gave them to students won a competition in a review math game like Kahoot or Quizizz. In addition to rewarding my students, the food was given to students who came to my room and stated that they were hungry from either not eating breakfast or for not eating in the cafeteria during lunch.\r\n\r\nI wish you could have seen the joy and curiosity when my students saw those boxes! They were absolutely thrilled to discover what was inside, and most put in maximum effort or at least tried to earn a reward.\r\n\r\nMy next step is to write another project so that we will have items for second semester. These items will expire by the end of this semester.
