Most of my students live in homes that are overcrowded and have very little space for studying or reading a good book. With social distancing and limited fun furniture for students, this project would address both the space and serve as an inspiration for my students to read and write. My school has desks that are no longer safe for students to sit in and they are discarding quite a few of them. I have removed the desktops from the obsolete desks and now I need the legs and items for students to personalize their desks. So what better way to teach students about STEM "upcycling and recycling" than making reading and writing Study Nooks that can be placed in parts of our school for them to enjoy a good book, write a great story, or study in private. This project is in need of legs to attach to the top parts of the old desks, a little paint, and a drill in order to personalize the study nooks. I have seen students take so much pride in what they make, but even more so for a purpose that they benefit from. Once we have completed their study nook, which will also include reupholstering a chair for their desk in the future, students can request going to their personalized study nook to read, write, or complete their assignments. The study nooks will be placed throughout the building allowing them to take on a sense of accountability and responsibility for both their learning but contributing to the decrease of trash in the environment. This type of project helps save our landfills and our students—providing them with a place to process information, read a good book, and write a great story.
