My students need 32 different graphic novels and comic books with titles from "Bone" to "The Prickly Peril" to add to our classroom library.

Remember Sunday morning comic strips when you were a kid? Imagine bringing that same feeling of excitement into a classroom. These days books have to compete with video games, TV shows, and movies. It's so important to have different types of literature available to students to encourage life-long reading. In my fourth grade integrated (special education and regular education student) classroom we do have an adequate selection of books but we don't have any graphic novels. Our school is located in a high-need community. We don't receive any money for classroom supplies. In fact, I provide many of my students with school supplies out of my own pocket as well as snacks and some clothing. I do have some quality literature in my classroom library (thanks to donorschoose and garage sales) but I don't have any graphic novels or comic books. Graphic novels and comics are very popular with those students who struggle with reading. I have 10 special education students in my room this year along with 10 regular education students. Graphic novels improve reading development and language acquisition in all students. Reading graphic novels and comics help students develop critical thinking skills that they can use and apply to other types of literature. I know my students would gravitate to a bin of these books. Graphic novels and comics are learning disguised as fun. I'm asking for around 30 graphic novels and comics encompassing many different genres including: biographies (Barack Obama, Harriet Tubman), history (Boston Massacre), fantasy (Bones, Jellaby), realistic fiction (Amelia Rules), science (Dinosaurs) and some classic comics (Garfield and Snoopy). These novels are also geared for many different grade levels from 1st-6th. With your help we can have a bin of engaging and fun reading that will encourage my students to become life-long lovers of reading. I know my students will love to read these books, especially students who are not reading on their grade level. They no longer have to be embarrassed about reading picture books while more advanced readers are enjoying chapter books. All the students in the class will have access to these books and will be clamoring for more. With your help, I can bring the fun back into reading for ALL my students.
