My Students

I am the librarian at an inner-city middle school. We have a diverse population, including English Language Learners. Our students are eager to create and explore. Our Makerspace area in the library is a place where kids love to come and make connections with their learning through collaboration and inquiry.

My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and have limited resources available to them at home.

Many are involved in an after-school program through our school and are here until early evening due to parents' work schedules.

Our middle school does its best to help access content that is meaningful and engaging. Due to lack of funding, we are limited in what types of resources we can provide our students.

My Project

Comfy seating allows students to take charge of their learning and provides choices for their learning environment. During independent reading time, students like to come and chill out in the reading corner in the library. Currently, my students are choosing to read in a variety of locations in the library such as: at different tables or sitting or laying on the floor. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed that students are more engaged in their reading when they have a comfortable environment to gather in. They almost always make good choices about their behavior when they are in the reading corner.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they have a comfy place to read.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options in our reading corner. The armchair will allow students to sit and enjoy their favorite books. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need a quiet and comfy place to come.

I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
