I am 1 of 6 Kindergarten teachers at our school. Our students come from diverse linguistic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. But more importantly, they are active, inquisitive, eager, and joyful learners every day. We are truly lucky!
These young years are critical to building early reading skills and building a love of learning and reading.
Our school provides a multi-sensory approach to learning while providing a balanced literacy program which leads to true engagement among students in reading. Our Kindergarten students are beginning to set goals for themselves as readers and are so eager to grow in their reading. Our school mission is to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of our students so they experience success, safety, fun and enjoyment, freedom and independence, valued purpose, and love and belonging.
My students love to read! But it can be a challenge for each student to find that "just right spot" in the classroom where they can settle in and immerse themselves in their books without distraction. They love to read on our couch so much that it appears just as loved.
With a class set of floor cushions, and a washable slipcover for our couch, each one of my Kindergartners will be able to cozy up in a clean, comfy spot.
This will help them to take ownership of their own reading experiences, and to build the stamina so vital to maintaining growth. Whether in the classroom, the hallway, or even the library, each student will have a self-selected spot to enjoy books independently, or with a reading buddy.
