This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I, creative arts magnet school in North Carolina. At my school, 75% or more of the students come from low income households. However, they do their best to come to school prepared to learn, each and everyday.
As a child, do you remember the excitement you felt when your teacher or parents read you a story?
I often tell my students this famous quote from Mary Pope Osborne, "Reading is a passport to countless adventures." My students enjoy this experience on a daily basis and love when I read aloud to them! Since many of them come from low income households, they sometimes do not have the opportunity to experience things that other children their age get to experience. So, reading and listening to books is a way for them to engage in the world around them.
My Project
My students would significantly benefit from the purchase of a new carpet. Our classroom was recently updated with all tile flooring, so right now, it will be a little uncomfortable for my students to sit on the hard floor, during instructional time. My students love to sit on "the carpet" and learn throughout the day. We use to utilize our carpet for read aloud time, independent reading and even during our morning and afternoon classroom meetings.
A brand new classroom carpet will allow my students to continue learning in an engaging format!
Having everyone on the carpet will also allow us to share our thoughts and ideas with one another and allow students to work collaboratively on their assignments.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
