My students come from diverse backgrounds. There are some who come to school prepared with everything they could possibly need and others who come to school hungry. We are a Title I school with a high poverty level. Many of our students come from rough home conditions.
It is heartbreaking when a student comes to school with barely a bookbag.
We live in a rural community. Replenishing supplies throughout the school year is nearly impossible as parents are unable to purchase them.
My Project
With these materials, my students will be able to relax and sit comfortably in various areas while doing their work. There's nothing worse than sitting in a hard desk chair for a long period of time. Having a variety of seating options, like those requested in this project, will give the students the chance to sit somewhere more flexible.
It is important in a 21st century classroom to create learning spaces other than the large group lesson area.
Flexible seating allows this opportunity to create those learning spaces within the classroom. One learning space will be at the students' desks with the chair bands. This will give students who are fidgety the ability to do just that. The yoga balls will be another space where students will use a clipboard for a work surface. Lastly, the lap desks allow the students to work from wherever they are sitting with ease. At these learning spaces is where students will be able to work collaboratively with their classmates, a skill that must be practiced at this young age to prepare our future leaders.
